Heat pump

Consumer unit for a heat pump

After the EV charger, a heat pump is the biggest load in a house and needs its own section: protection sized for the starting current, a contactor for the tariff or the “SG Ready” signal (heat harder when power is cheap or there is surplus from the panels) and a supply for the controller.

Sound familiar?

  • A heat pump connected to an ordinary socket circuit trips the breaker when it starts.
  • No control from solar PV — surplus goes to the grid instead of the heat buffer.
  • You can’t tell how much electricity goes on heating and how much on the rest of the house.

What's in this consumer unit

  • Heat pump section: 3-phase circuit breaker, contactor, controller supply (6 modules).
  • Certified 3-phase sub-meter with a Modbus port — to measure heating costs.
  • Smart Energy: heat pump control from solar PV surplus and dynamic tariffs.

Frequently asked questions

Which consumer unit version should I choose for a house with a heat pump?

For a house of 150–250 m², usually L; with solar PV, a home battery and an EV charger — XL. The configurator shows how full the DIN rail is and suggests a larger version when it gets tight.

What is SG Ready?

A standard control input on heat pumps. The consumer unit (or a smart home system) sends a signal telling the pump to heat harder when electricity is cheap or there is surplus from the panels.
