EV charger

Consumer unit for an electric car charger

A wallbox is the biggest load in a house — 11 kW for several hours. The consumer unit needs a separate section with a 3-phase circuit breaker and an RCD of the right type, and with a small supply capacity, load management that slows charging down when the induction hob comes on.

Sound familiar?

  • An 11–14 kW supply: the charger plus a heat pump trip the main fuse before the meter.
  • A wallbox without built-in DC fault detection needs an expensive Type B RCD.
  • The charger installer asks for a “prepared section” in the consumer unit.

What's in this consumer unit

  • 11 or 22 kW charger section: 3-phase circuit breaker and Type A RCD (included) or Type B.
  • Dynamic load management: a meter on the house supply controls the charging power.
  • Certified 3-phase sub-meter — for billing charging costs (for example, a company car).

Frequently asked questions

11 or 22 kW?

Most cars charge at home at 11 kW at most (limited by the on-board charger). 22 kW needs a supply of at least 25 kW and a car with a 22 kW on-board charger — usually not worth paying extra for.

Do I need a Type B RCD?

If the wallbox has built-in 6 mA DC fault detection (most new ones do), Type A is enough. Check the data sheet or give us the model in the form — we will check.

What does load management do?

The charger automatically reduces its power when the house is drawing a lot of electricity. This means you don’t have to increase your supply capacity with the network operator.
